About us
DiMe is a free legal aid service that provides legal assistance and guidance to people who have experienced, or have questions about, discrimination, racism, harassment, hate speech, or hate crime.
We work to ensure that more people are aware of their rights and have meaningful access to legal support when they need it. Through legal assistance, public education, and outreach activities, we help strengthen legal protection against discrimination and contribute to a more inclusive society.
For many people, it can be difficult to know what their rights are, where to turn for help, or how to respond when they experience discrimination. DiMe was established because no one should have to face these challenges alone.
We believe that access to rights is about more than what is written in the law. It is also about having the knowledge, support, and opportunity to make use of those rights in practice. That is why we work to make legal assistance accessible, understandable, and free of charge for those who need it.
Today, DiMe has offices in Oslo and Bergen. The Oslo office primarily assists people across Eastern Norway, while the Bergen office serves individuals throughout Vestland. We also accept inquiries from other parts of the country whenever our capacity allows.
Our long-term goal is to develop DiMe into a nationwide service with a local presence in more regions of Norway, ensuring that more people have access to legal assistance, guidance, and support regardless of where they live. We believe that no one should have to face discrimination alone, and that rights only have real value when they can be exercised in practice.
No one should have to navigate discrimination or injustice on their own.
Our history
DiMe Oslo was established in 2018 at the initiative of the City of Oslo to improve access to legal assistance and guidance in cases involving discrimination and racism.
In 2021, DiMe Bergen was established as an extension of this work in Vestland. An important foundation for its establishment was the report on structural racism in Bergen, which highlighted the need for an accessible low-threshold service for people experiencing discrimination and racism.
The establishment of both offices is rooted in a simple idea. Rights have little value if people do not know what their rights are or where to turn for help. DiMe therefore works to make legal assistance and guidance more accessible to those who need it.
